Norfolk Windmills
Its an often quoted fact that Norfolk has more windmills than Holland. I went to the trouble of counting them on the map once and lost track at around 50. Most are drainage mills, which were built to pump water from fields that are in some cases below sea level. That job is nowadays done with electric pumps, so the windmills are redundant. Some have been restored, but most stand as romantic ruins - relics of a bygone age in an empty landscape.
